Centre competition days give athletes the chance to run, jump, throw, record results and aim to improve their personal bests each week.

Saturday Competition

Compete, Improve
& Have Fun

Ashmore Little Athletics Centre competition days are held on Saturday afternoons. Athletes compete in a rotation of events and aim to improve their time, height or distance each week.

Competition generally begins from around 12:45pm with warm-up and announcements, with events starting shortly after.

Sessions usually run for approximately two hours, depending on numbers, weather and the event program.

Event locations may be adjusted by Centre officials when required. Please follow announcements and directions from age marshals and volunteers on the day.

Information

Key details for families attending Centre competition days.

When

Competition days are held on Saturday afternoons. Warm-up and announcements begin from approximately 12:45pm.

Events

Athletes usually compete in five events each Saturday, including sprints, hurdles, long distance, walks, jumps and throws.

Personal Bests

The focus is on participation, effort and improvement. Athletes are encouraged to improve their own results each week.

Event
Program

Each competition day includes a mix of track and field events. The exact program may vary depending on the weekly roster, age groups, weather and Centre requirements.

Athletes move through events with their age group and participate in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Sprints

Short running events focused on speed and technique.

Hurdles

Athletes practise rhythm, confidence and safe hurdling technique.

Distance

Longer running events help athletes build pacing and endurance.

Walks

Race walking events help athletes learn correct walking technique.

Jumps

Jumping events may include long jump, high jump or other age-appropriate jumps.

Throws

Throwing events may include shot put, discus, javelin or other age-appropriate throws.

Warm Up

Athletes take part in a group warm-up before competition begins.

Age Groups

Athletes compete with their age group during Centre competition days.

Adult
Supervision

It is compulsory for all athletes to be accompanied by an adult during competition days. Athletes must remain at the Brian Johnston Athletics Track during competition and training sessions.

Parent
Participation

Ashmore Little Athletics relies on parent and family support each week.

How Families Help

To enable the smooth running of competition days, parents and family members are required to assist with weekly duties.

  • Timekeeping.
  • Measuring heights and distances.
  • Recording results.
  • Acting as Age Marshalls.
  • Helping with set-up and pack-up where needed.

Behaviour & Safety

Families are asked to support positive behaviour so that Ashmore Little Athletics remains safe and enjoyable for all athletes.

  • Correct Ashmore uniform must be worn on competition days.
  • Encourage athletes to respect each other, officials and volunteers.
  • Unruly or disruptive behaviour will not be tolerated.
  • Extreme behaviour may be reported to the Centre Manager.
  • The Centre takes no responsibility if athletes leave the grounds.

Important
Information

Some rules and procedures are in place to help Centre competition days run smoothly and safely for all athletes and families.

Families should follow Centre announcements and check communication channels for updates, especially when weather may affect competition.

Under 6 Athletes

Under 6 athletes compete at Centre level only and do not compete at Regional or State level competitions.

Wet Weather

If competition cannot be held due to weather, a decision is usually made and communicated to families by approximately 12:00pm.

Wet Program

In mild weather, a modified wet weather program of three events may be run.

Families should follow the Centre Facebook page for competition updates and announcements.

Group
Warm-Up

All athletes are expected to participate in the group warm-up before competition begins.

Before Competition

A group warm-up is conducted before the start of Centre competition days to prepare athletes for their events.

Good Habits

The warm-up helps teach athletes how to prepare their bodies and develop the habit of warming up before events.

Older Athletes

Older athletes are encouraged to take part, as their involvement has a positive effect on younger athletes.

Recording
Results

Centre recorders maintain master recording sheets that list each athlete’s individual performances for Centre competition days.

Athletes and families are encouraged to check Results HQ for weekly results. Please be aware that it may take up to 72 hours for results to be uploaded.

Ready For

Make sure your athlete is registered, wearing the correct uniform, supervised by an adult and ready to participate in the group warm-up.
